In their conversation, they mentioned that one doctor advised against pursuing surgery to save Berkeley's life, while others suggested institutionalizing him. Despite these challenges, Phyllis and Laura emphasized that their entire family, including Laura and her three siblings, immediately embraced Berkeley and cherished him as a precious gift. They both strongly believe that individuals with Down syndrome, like Berkeley, are fully capable of leading meaningful lives, and they cannot imagine their own lives without him.
