Sarah (S) shares how she met her ex-husband Scott Flack while he was playing volleyball in college in Wichita, KS. S says that Scott was in the Air Force and that he went from active duty to the reserves.
S recalls the beginning of their marriage and talks about the time when he was deployed around the first Iraq War. S describes Scott’s work as a chaplain’s assistant in the Air Force.
S remembers that Scott was deployed soon after she found out she was pregnant. She says he was working around the Green Highway daily during this time and considers the emotional impact this deployment had on him.
S says she was able to stay in touch with him over email and keep him posted on the pregnancy.
S remembers getting groceries while going into labor.
S says they let Scott come home early from his deployment, and remembers their first Christmas together as a hard one.
S describes Scott’s mental health struggles once he was back home, and talks about his first suicide attempt.
S reflects on how she felt during this time and says she reached out to the military for support. She says Scott was then sent to live on base in Colorado Springs.
S says juggling family, work, and life became too much and led to their divorce. She says they stayed close afterward.
S describes Scott and his personality and remembers how big volleyball was for him.
S shares what she wants their kids to know about him. She also shares what she would say to people who are in her situation.
S remembers some of the fun dates they went on, from amusement parks to a newfound interest in March Madness.
