This One Small Step conversation was recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia as part of the Sorensen Institute’s summer High School Leaders Program in 2023. Simone Nied (16) is from Virginia Beach and Diana Carlson (16) is from Fairfax. The pair discuss the origins of their political beliefs, and the influence that their parents had on shaping their values. Simone discusses her experience interning for Congresswoman Elaine Luria, including having meaningful and sometimes challenging conversations with fellow constituents. Diana shares how, while she identified strongly with the Democratic party, she is troubled by the two-party system. The two talk about issues important to them, including abortion access, affirmative action, and racism.
