Honest vulnerability made
Shyla and I fast friends when we met in Southeast Asia, far from our Southern roots. I also became a fan of her writing (under the pseudonym S.M. Holland) and took this opportunity to discuss "Get In My Head," her premiere series of stories about teenagers, struggling with mental illnesses. She makes learning fascinating and invites readers into more compassionate mental health awareness. Our conversation dives into the attention mental health is getting in 2020 as over 10 million COVID-19 deaths keep some of us at home and keep others fighting to disprove the facts. As the pandemic exposes inequality, killing mostly African and Latino Americans, she is also acknowledging black pain by doing her homework and unlearning the lies COVID-19 has proven untrue.
