Description

For this project I interviewed my Aunt who is 65. I started to ask my family of any historical events that they lived through and she was really passionate about this topic. When my aunt was in 5th grade her class had the opportunity to write a letter to a Vietnam War soldier. The soldiers got to write back to them so they were pretty much a pen pal. The soldier that wrote to my aunt told a lot about his family, pets and other various things. As you can imagine, I’m sure he refrained from talking about war things as that is not super appropriate for a 5th grader. When my aunt was older she went to Washington DC to the Vietnam War memorial, but did not find his name, which means he was not killed in combat. She really liked writing the letters to the soldier and would recommend for future classrooms. Since I do not see any wars in the future, teachers could modify this to write letters to other classes, or other communities. I hope my aunt can find those letters, because I think it would be really cool to read them!
