Description

Expedition Project Manager Thomas Ronge discusses his experiences as a sedimentologist at sea on JOIDES Resolution. He provides an overview of the collaboration across cultures and roles on the ship during JR's two-month expeditions, from his time in Iceberg Alley (EXP 398), in the Hellenic Arc Volcanic Field (EXP 398), and his upcoming work in the Eastern Fram Strait (EXP 403). From the equipment used on and off the ship to the advances in technology, Thomas shares his excitement for the work that continues onshore post-expedition and future work that will occur in Deep Earth microbiology. Having sailing on 12 different expeditions (including the R/V Polarstern), Thomas is quick to share that the best moment from all of his time at sea was meeting his wife on the JR.

Thomas mentions the work of scientist Claire Jasper, part of the recorded conversations in the Tales from the Deep collection: https://archive.storycorps.org/interviews/the-icelandic-coast-guard-brought-the-drilling-equipment-it-was-24-hour-excitement-we-hadnt-seen-any-other-humans-in-the-past-6-weeks/
