Description

John Bolten doesn’t need to get his hands dirty to learn about crop yields. Using satellite images, the Associate Program Manager of Water Resources for the NASA Applied Sciences Program has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to directly observe soil moisture – a key driver of crop health which can help to forecast future yields.

Bolten’s work on water isn’t limited to agriculture. He has also been involved in the projects tracking famine in East Africa and helping emergency workers respond effectively to massive flash floods triggered by the breakdown of a dam in Laos in July 2018. Bolten’s passion for hydrology goes back to his love for fishing and canoeing on the river in West Virginia while growing up. (Recorded 10 December 2018)
