Shelda Washington (67) says she was born in Durham, North Carolina, but she does not remember it. She says all of her memories are of New York. She says she did spend summers in North Carolina with her father.
Shelda remembers both of her grandmothers working and contributing to her upbringing. She says her mother worked for 30 years at B. Altman Department Store. She says her mother was also a waitress at Charleston Gardens, a restaurant within the store.
